About DebtBeater

Welcome to DebtBeater - the blog focused on helping people by example beat their debt and continue on with a debt-free life.

Why we’re here

For about the last 10 years, I’ve been through the good and bad relationships with many kinds of debt. I was completely debt free for some years, and in WAY over my head for most of the others. I’ve finally gotten to that point in my life where there’s really no place to go but up, or else I’m going to hit rock bottom.

My wife and I have dedicated ourselves to making sure we don’t let our crummy financial decisions negatively affect our children’s lives. We’re simply determined to make a plan and stick to it until we make it back into a debt-free environment. Not only do WE need to get our act together for the sake of properly running a family household, but we need to set a positive example for our CHILDREN so they can learn the correct way to manage their finances as well. We’re going to lead by positive example!

Not only that, but I really wanted to get into the habit of documenting our methodology and progress. I want to also share our story with everyone else in the world out there so you can not only see and learn from our experience, but also help each other as a community. The community really forces more accountability as well as giving multiple fronts of encouragement for everyone.

What’s different

Something that I intend to distinguish between DebtBeater and some of the other personal finance sites out there is the use of actual numbers. I want to give you an actual account of what is going on in my particular scenario to help you best understand what’s happening in our efforts to beat our debt. Anyone can tell you a generic 200-word story about how to get out of debt and become wealthy beyond your wildest dreams. There’s hundreds of places out there that say you need to make a budget and even tell you how to get started. DebtBeater is a place where we’re going to simply document what we’re doing, and share actual spreadsheets that we’re using in hopes of giving you all footsteps to follow instead of pointing at someone wearing shoes.

Also, being a software developer has its perks when entering the web arena as a part-time entrepreneur.  I’ve got some plans for some tools and mini-sites that I’ve yet to see anyone else doing.  I can’t put a time frame on when I’ll actually have something to share just yet, but I didn’t want to wait on starting the blog (or documenting my progress for all to see) until I finished them.  I want to focus completely on the blog for now anyway until I’m comfortable with the setup.

Welcome!

So I welcome you again to DebtBeater. I encourage you to participate, ask questions, and share advice from the lessons you’ve learned and about the debts you’ve beaten.

Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or would like more information on DebtBeater.

Disclaimer

This blog is completely free for all to see and use at their own risk. I am not a licensed finance professional, but have plenty of experience learning lessons the hard way. This blog will likely bring in a small income from some basic advertising, but all income made from this blog will be applied firstly toward the expense of maintaining this site and adding useful features for assisting in debt-reduction and secondly toward my own personal debt until it is completely eliminated. Once that’s completed, we’ll probably throw one hell of a party and give massive numbers of prizes to other DebtBeaters. :)

I agree with the idea of using actual numbers and I do the same on my blog. For me, when I started getting out of debt, it was nice to the actual numbers from people who had actually gotten out of debt and not just giving general instructions on how to get out of debt.

This is a FANTASTIC idea and I’m glad I found you. Can’t wait to start digging through and soaking up good stuff. Keep up the good work!

Although my goal is to get debtfree my blog isn’t about getting debt free but rather the journey to change what got us in debt in the first place, hense journey to frugaldomm. While I read alot of getting out debt blogs I personal prefer not to focus on our debt. I do agree real numbers help, never ceases to amaze how much money it takes to keep a roof over ones head.

Very nice intro! I admire you guys putting your finances out there for the world to see! I’ve often thought that people might take more interest in my site if I did the same but I think it would be hard for my friends and family to understand why I would do such a thing. WHat was your extended families reaction to your decision to “open the books”?

    @Ben

The only person that knows about this site besides me is my wife. We simply decided to take the approach of keeping it a tool for us and the world without getting those we know directly involved. Writing from a more anonymous identity makes it far easier to just let it all out there without having to hear about what I’m doing wrong from all of the family at each gathering. I simply didn’t want to hesitate sharing something on here because of who might find out.

It wouldn’t be the end of the world if family eventually found out. I’m just hoping to make a ton of progress in the right direction FIRST. ;)

Congrats on your blog and approach … I waited 5 years to start my blog because I wanted to actually DO everything that I write about. Over that time (plus the 2 years prior) I went from [only] $30k in debt to $7million in the bank …safely and ethically…

It may take you a little longer, because you’re starting even further behind, but it’s ‘doable’ … Good Luck, and Thanks! AJC.
