Bottom line is that you should aim to break even at end of year and if you're going to miss the mark, you should miss by slightly underpaying your withholding. IMHO. I've always declared a good number of dependents, though I have no children. I had a wise boss at my first job who told me about that. I've always come in just about right at the end of the year.
